What to Do About a Damaged Concrete Surface

Repairs needed depend on the type of damage you have and what you want for your surface.

What to do if your concrete is damaged

  • If you have minor damage but you also want to completely redo the look of your concrete slab, resurfacing is the perfect option. Your contractor will need to properly repair your surface, addressing any existing issues, adequately prepare the surface, then they can install a coating on top. This option will leave you with a surface that looks brand-new. Read more about resurfacing here.
  • If you have minor damage such as hairline cracks or a few spots that are chipping, you may want to just have a contractor spot repair the surface. A contractor experienced in color matching can blend the repaired area in with the rest of your surface if you want to keep the same look you already have. Keep in mind that even though an experienced contractor can get it looking pretty good, it will never look perfect—you will probably be able to tell where the old damage was.
  • If your concrete slab has major damage such a deep cracks or significant chips or spalling, the surface may not be a good candidate for a concrete coating. Be wary of any contractor that tries to tell you they can put a coating on a surface that is in significant disrepair. At SUNDEK of PA, we will never recommend a coating for a surface that isn’t viable.

No matter which of these categories you fall into, we can help. Contact us for a free consultation and quote for concrete repair.

Evaluating Your Surface to Avoid Future Damage

When a contractor evaluates your surface, they should assess the site to determine what’s causing the damage. For example, some cracking is inevitable, but there may be a more serious issue going on such as structural errors made during the concrete pour. A reputable contractor will make sure that they’re not placing a coating on top of a surface that’s just going to crack again.

At SUNDEK of PA, when we provide a consultation and quote for a property, we always examine the site to see if there’s anything that can be done to prevent future damage. Any contractor who plans to work on your property should do the same. Contact us for a site consultation and free quote.

An Option for Cracked Concrete

For concrete slabs with several hairline cracks, our Custom Scoreline Effect is a fantastic option. With this method, we actually work with the cracks to create a new design. Using the existing cracks as a starting point, we then create a pattern that incorporates additional hand-drawn “cracks” (which are really just scorelines). This is a great way to address cracked surfaces because by keeping the existing cracks in place, you’re minimizing the chances that additional cracking will occur later on.

How Much Does it Cost to Repair a Concrete Surface?

Costs vary depending on the type of repair, which affects materials and labor costs. If you plan to spot-treat the repaired location and do color matching, there will be materials and labor costs for that work, too. If you decide to resurface the entire slab, the cost depends on which coating product you choose in addition to any staining or stamping design.

The best way to find out exactly how much your repair and potential resurfacing will cost is to contact a contractor for a site walkthrough, consultation, and quote. Contact us for a free quote.

Why Hire a Professional to Do Concrete Repair

It makes sense to want to save money by attempting a repair yourself, but it’s critical that you know what you’re doing before attempting the repair. Repairing and/or color matching can be a difficult process depending on the extent of the issue. Contractors already have the specialized tools required, so hiring a professional to do the job means you don’t have to purchase tools you likely won’t use again. An experienced contractor is familiar with the common pitfalls you might encounter when repairing concrete.

By avoiding expensive mistakes, you can often save money in the long run by hiring a professional contractor to complete your repair project.
